Crisis resources — use these, not Commune Coach

If you’re thinking about suicide or self harm, in emotional crisis, or worried about someone else:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — call or text 988 (United States). Free, confidential, 24/7.
  • Crisis Text Line — text HOME to 741741.
  • Emergency — call 911 (US) or your local emergency number.
  • Outside the US — find a helpline in your country at findahelpline.com.

These services connect you with trained humans. Commune Coach cannot do what they do.

What Commune Coach is

Commune Coach is an artificial intelligence wellness companion. It personalizes your programs, content, and guidance based on what you share with it. That means:

  • It draws on the knowledge and methods of Commune’s programs and teachers.
  • It is available anytime, and it can be genuinely useful for learning and coaching.
  • It can be wrong. AI systems sometimes generate confident-sounding statements that are inaccurate or made up (the industry word is “hallucinate”). Treat Coach answers as a starting point, not a verdict.

What Commune Coach is not

  • Not a person. When you chat with Commune Coach, no human is typing back. You are talking to software.
  • Not your doctor, therapist, or counselor. Commune Coach provides general wellness coaching and education, not healthcare, diagnosis, or treatment. Nothing the Coach says creates a doctor-patient or therapist-client relationship, and your conversations are not legally privileged.
  • Not crisis care. Commune Coach cannot call for help, assess danger the way a trained human can, or stay with you through an emergency.
  • No human standing by. Nobody at Commune is watching your conversation in real time. We say this plainly because some services imply otherwise.

If the Coach’s answer touches your health, finances, or legal situation, check it with a qualified professional before acting on it.

For minors. Commune and Commune Coach are for adults, 18 and over. Companion-style AI may not be suitable for minors, and Commune Coach is not offered to them. We require that users attest that they are at least 18 prior to using the AI tools.

How the crisis guardrails actually work — our published crisis-response protocol

This section is the crisis-response protocol we maintain and publish under California’s companion-chatbot law (SB 243). What it describes is what the product actually does.

We built guardrails into Commune Coach, and we want to be honest about exactly what they do:

  • The coach is prevented from producing suicide ideation material. Every coach is constrained from generating content that encourages, instructs on, or glamorizes suicide, self-harm, or disordered eating — including when the request is framed as fiction, role-play, research, or hypothetical.
  • The coach responds immediately. If a conversation suggests you may be at risk — for example, mentions of self-harm, suicide ideation or suicide intent — the coach immediately surfaces crisis resources like the ones above, right in the conversation.
  • That automated response is the immediate response. It happens in seconds, without waiting for any human. This response does not alert anybody and is not an emergency dispatch.
  • A human can follow up afterward — not in real time. When a crisis guardrail fires, an alert goes to a designated person and that person may check in with you later, with care. This is follow-up, not monitoring: there is no human watching live, and the alert is not an emergency dispatch.
  • The alert protects your privacy. The alert itself contains only a user ID, a timestamp, and which guardrail fired — never the content of your conversation. If a designated person needs context to follow up well, they view it through a secure admin page, and every one of those views is logged.

Privacy of crisis events

A guardrail firing is sensitive information, and we treat it that way:

  • Alert messages never include what you wrote.
  • Access to the underlying conversation is restricted and logged.
  • Crisis-event data is used only to enable follow-up and to keep the guardrails working — never for marketing or advertising, and it is never sold.
  • Who receives alerts depends on how your coach is deployed: for coaches operated by a creator, the creator’s designated person; for coaches operated by Origins, our safety team. The policies shown on your coach’s accept screen tell you whose privacy policy governs. Details live in our Privacy Policy and Consumer Health Data Privacy Policy.

How to report a safety concern

If Commune Coach said something dangerous, a guardrail failed, or anything about the Coach worried you:

Safety reports are reviewed periodically and reports of guardrail failures are escalated in priority.
